What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs). It is primarily used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Semaglutide mimics the effects of a naturally occurring hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1).

GLP-1 is produced in the intestines and helps regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin secretion, reducing glucagon production (a hormone that raises blood sugar levels), slowing down gastric emptying, and promoting feelings of satiety. By acting as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, Semaglutide enhances the effects of GLP-1 in the body.

This results in improved blood sugar control reduced HbA1c levels (a measure of long-term blood sugar control) and aids in weight loss.
